Pocket Publishing

As soon as I heard about “moblogging”, I wanted to try it. The idea of using phones for instant publishing to the Web seemed very futuristic and the technical simplicity made it even more attractive. So I got all excited and made Pocket Publishing, my own “moblog”.

I have sent hundreds of photographs from my phone to this site, via Kevin’s brilliant mfop. From the start, Pocket Publishing hasn’t been about photography—it is a personal, searchable archive of what I’ve been up to and, as such, probably of limited interest to most.

I started “moblogging” in March ’03. Since then, the excitement has died down and my own use of my site has become increasingly sporadic. But I’m still using it and I like how it both records and distorts my life. In that sense, it illustrates a gap between the theory and practice of “moblogging”.

“Moblogging” has come to mean “sending photos from your phone to your weblog” and I find this association with the “blogosphere” very limiting. I would prefer a less narrowly defined combination of physical mobility with digital publishing. Flickr is a good start.
